- Abstract
- The church of Odarslöv is a partly medieval church just outside Lund. It is one of six churches in the parish of Torn which is small in number. Since 1990 the church has been closed due to damage by subsidence and danger of collapse, and is since 2002 officially cancelled. The parish does not need the church and is not willing to pay the vast amount that is needed to restore the church. The problem of church redundancy is common and increasing all over Western Europe. But the problem does not necessarily mean that the parishioners don’t want their church. There are some solutions to the problem, such as demolition, selling or leaving the church with a minimum of upkeep. 2007 the new church of Maglarp, outside Trelleborg, was torn down.... (More)

This was something quite unusual due to the restrictive laws in Sweden. If the same can happen to the church of Odarslöv is uncertain. Compared to the new church of Maglarp, from 1908, the church of Odarslöv has many benefits. Medieval churches are considered better constructed and more important to keep than churches from the Gothic Revival. Besides antiquarian authorities strive to prevent church decline and similar cases as Maglarp. But at the same time the two churches were protected by the same law.
It isn’t possible to exclude that the church of Odarslöv will be torn down. But if it happens, it will mean a change of Swedish culture care. If instead the church remains standing, someday it might be needed again. (Less)
