- Abstract

To serve the purpose we have been working within the frame of following questions:
• How can one, by using the method of a combined quantitative and qualitative content analysis, study how alcohol and drug abusers are socially constructed?
• Is it possible to get relevant information about the subject above through studying verdicts made according to The Care of Alcoholics and Drug Abuser Act (LVM 1988:870)?
• What does the social services, the county administrative court and the individual abuser focus on to argue for and state their reasons for a wished for outcome of the verdict?
• Is it possible to perceive patterns according to gender in the social construction of drug abusers?
Through this study we have come to the conclusion that it is possible to get information from verdicts as those mentioned above, about how alcohol and drug abusers are socially constructed by using the method of a combined quantitative and qualitative content analysis. The design of the tool used for analysing the text is however of vital importance for the width and depth of the results. We have also seen that the social services, the county administrative court and the individual abuser are constructing alcohol and drug abusers by referring to the abusers deviant behaviour in areas such as medical circumstances, the character of the drug- or alcohol abuse, personal qualities, social circumstances and earlier experiences of abuse treatment. Finally, we have seen no distinct patterns according to gender in the social construction of drug abusers in this certain study. (Less)
