- Abstract
- The aim of this master thesis is to examine the energy discourse of the EU. For this purpose history of concepts and discourse analysis is used.
I show that the EU energy discourse is undergoing a change in the formulation of the Lisbon Treaty through the use of the concept of solidarity. This can be seen as the giving of a social dimension to the discourse and hence, a social dimension to the future politics, as language and practice are tightly connected. This we can also expect to see in the case of the project of a Baltic Sea gas pipeline as well as in the public debate.

At the same time there will be a shift in meaning in the concept of solidarity as it is taken from socially oriented discourses to more technical and economical discourses, which is the case of the EU energy discourse.
My conclusions also show that the use of the solidarity concept is the accepted language when trying to formulate energy problems and their solutions. Everyone participating in this field of politics and debate therefore have to relate to this discourse as well as make solidarity their own concept. (Less)
