Abstract
Track switches are vital parts in the railway construction. They meet an important feature when planing and stearing the traffic flow through them to increase capacity. To ensure functionality during winter they have since the 50- century systematically installed switch heating with different technical solutions but with the same objective, to keep the moving parts on the switch free from snow and ice. Snow and ice easy raises problem on the railway construction. To control track switches during the winter period is one of the major problems. Track switches are vital parts in the railway construction. They meet an important feature when planing and stearing the traffic flow through them to increase capacity. To ensure functionality during winter they have since the 50- century systematically installed switch heating with different technical solutions but with the same objective, to keep the moving parts on the switch free from snow and ice. Snow and ice easy raises problem on the railway construction. To control track switches during the winter period is one of the major problems. The track switch function is necessary to divert the rail taffic without that delays occurs. Non- functional track switches that either freezes solid due to a combination of humidty and frost or blocked by snow and ice, can paralyze rail traffic. If the rial traffic paralyzes important parts of sociaty stops working. The dependence of switch heating is therefore in deacades a standard within the railway sector.In winter they keeps the track switches free of snow and ice. In the beginning the railway used glowing coal to keep the switches moveable at minus dergees. After that gas, LPG, powerfull air fan and electric elements has been used. Railwayswitches in Sweden is almost exclusively heated with longitidunal electrical heating elements placed on the railfoot and the switch rail. The insatlled power depends on switch size and heating need and amounds to between 3,6-23 kW. The heatingtechnology is werry energydemanding and needs controls to reduce consumtion. The high energyuse charges they who manages and use the railway. Even the climate is affected depending how the electricity is produced. In Sweden the heatingtechnology has not changed much compared with when it was introduced in the 50- century. The elements placed along the railfoot has poor efficiency, high heatloss and high energy consumtion. Instead of changing or make the heatingtechnology more effective Banverket has chosen to improve the controling of the heating. Today the modern heatingconstructions is controlled with web- bassed systems to be monitored as individuals via internet. Still there are old hetingconstructions that dayly devour energy to low benefit. At very cold weather, abundant snowfall and vind the today´s switchheating is not enough. At -15- 17°C the construction stops working if it hasen’t got covering such as pressings or lid that insulates and is capable of yet 5° minus more. Afterwards it will be complementaried with trackpassing brusching mashines or manual snow removal. The appearancetime varies a lot and yearly causes expensive delays. Such a geographical large construction with climatic differences requires a good organizational structure. A good organization within energy management is requierd for conecting the construction to a coherent unit that works with the same conditions. Today much of the work is done seperately between the different regions at Banverket without correspondence. Valuable information and experience does not spread which prevents the efficiency. To lower the energycosts Banverket must have a unit which actively works with energyefficiency, a unit which controls all constructions and settings. Heatingconstructions has in fact been found with switchtemperatures at 30-50°C and even they which already provide the constructiono with full effect at 10°C. Banverket annualy consume energy for one billion SEK, which correspondents with 2500 GWh. The inrastructure with switch heating stands for 10 % of the consumtion. Switch heating has the largest potential to make energycuts, when 35 million SEK easily can be done with organized energy management and better energycontroling at all constructions. The development goes sadly slow when it comes to technology and organization. According to transportpolitical activies wich applies to the entire transportnetwork for all actors within the transportsector it cearly stands that energy efficiency must achieve. Banverket have themselve the recent years said that the energyconsumtion shall reduce. (Less)
