The findings demonstrate that it is the principal, not the personnel who report suspicions of child maltreatment to the social services. The preschool personnel interpret their obligation to report as a duty, something that was included in their role as preschool personnel. Even though they felt obligated to report child maltreatment they didn’t always make the report. They felt insecure in when to report and how much evidence they needed. Discussions were held within the working team and with the parents of the child. The preschool personnel stated that one big concern in the reporting process was the fact that they did not know if a report was in the best interest of the child, a fear of making the child’s life worse rather than better. Dilemmas were created by the fact that the preschool personnel felt unable to influence children’s wellbeing and at the same time being left with a big responsibility for their wellbeing. The lack of power and influence was many times hard to handle. (Less)
