In this study I have sought to understand the conditions for knowledge and objectivity in family assessment-work. I have used a philosophical theory to reach understanding of what possibilities and obstacles there are for an assessor in trying to reach knowledge about, and to be objective in, working with child and family-assessment. To fulfill my purpose I have made one group- and one single-interview with assessors on the field. I have also made an interview with a researcher and expert on this area. In this study I have sought to understand the conditions for knowledge and objectivity in family assessment-work. I have used a philosophical theory to reach understanding of what possibilities and obstacles there are for an assessor in trying to reach knowledge about, and to be objective in, working with child and family-assessment. To fulfill my purpose I have made one group- and one single-interview with assessors on the field. I have also made an interview with a researcher and expert on this area. Furthermore I have made studies in social acts; five assessments and one empty BBIC-document (Swedish equivalence of the English LACS) have been in focus in these studies. Some of the conclusions I have made in this essay are that in emphasizing a “child’s best”, or giving “the child’s interests” the heaviest weight, the assessment practice is partial and hence not objective in this sense, but in this situation it is the goal to be objective in searching knowledge and propose what is objectively in the child’s interest. Furthermore I have suggested that in being loosely defined combined with being of heaviest weight, the “child’s best” can be the soil in which the use and abuse of power can grow. I have also discussed the notion that other people and colleagues are a resource for being objective.
