- Abstract
- Since the elimination of prostitution in the 1950’s, China has been virtually free from this alleged social problem until the 1980’s, when the “open door policy” seemed to bring it back to the surface, forcing the government to react and bring the subject up to debate. Using Chinese research data, this paper strives towards understanding the situation of prostitutes and prostitution in contemporary China. It also examines the methods used by the Chinese government to eradicate sextrade in the past as well as the present.
