This study concerns the councellors work with children in special programs for pupils with intellectual disabilities. The purpose was to se how counceller work with the children in special programs for pupils with intellectual disibilities. councellor does the children need; in what way does the councellor work and finally what type of competence is important in the councellors work with intellectully disabled children. Important in the study was the fact that children’s needs do affect the councellors work. The children has different needs. Some of them were similar to the needs of any other teenager such as finding their identity in the borderland between adolescence and adult. Others were more typical for the diagnosis like thoughts about their identity in relation to their diagnosis.
Help with financial aid as well as relationship issues are typical questions as well. The councellors points out that the children sometimes have difficulties feeling affinities to the diagnosis. Complications arise because the children want to be like any teenager but are relegated to a special school. Due to this problem the councellors put much attention on the children’s self-esteem. Other than this the work consists of, for example, individual
conversations with the pupils as well as with their parents. In this section of councellary work important competence to possess is a degree in social work which all interviewed councellors have pointed out. The study shows that the diversity of the children’s needs implies fexibility in the councellors work. (Less)
