- Abstract
- The main purpose of this paper is to study sugar and its historical archaeology. And also give a wide picture on how one can examine a product with different sources as complement to the archaeological material. In combining archaeology with written sources show how you can get a wider picture on the history of sugar. Different aspects of sugar will be discussed in order to show that there are many layers to the history of sugar and the different areas that production of sugar affect. The technological production of making sugar where there is archaeology will be combined with history. - The main purpose of this paper is to study sugar and its historical archaeology. And also give a wide picture on how one can examine a product with different sources as complement to the archaeological material. In combining archaeology with written sources show how you can get a wider picture on the history of sugar. Different aspects of sugar will be discussed in order to show that there are many layers to the history of sugar and the different areas that production of sugar affect. The technological production of making sugar where there is archaeology will be combined with history. Sugars ecological impact on the environment and the resources needed to grow sugarcane will be discussed from how the landscape change and how colonisation of the New World meant that new species, crops and diseases where introduced. Two different aspects of the social changes in sugars history will be looked at, the social situation in the production of sugar, mainly in the New World with slavery and also on how the colonialists created a new social structure with the plantation and how runaway slaves in Brazil created a new social identity. Another social aspect is that of consumption of sugar and how it changed within the society. The last chapter will look on how sugar affected the individual, to see changes in the consumption of sugar and if it increases in time by looking at the health aspect. (Less)
