- Abstract (Swedish)
- Children are constantly surrounded by stereotypes in the form of books, television series, and films. The majority of children acquire knowledge about gender stereotypes at 3-4 years of age. Gender stereotypes can influence children’s personalities, social relations and future plans regarding occupation. The study at hand investigated whether 4-5 year old girls in preschool were affected in their future occupational plans after listening to either a gender neutral or a gender stereotyped children’s book. Questions concerning future occupational preferences, preferred playing items and colours were asked upon hearing either of the two stories. As hypothesized, the results of this study indicated a trend on an open-ended question for the... (More)

The study at hand investigated whether 4-5 year old girls in preschool were affected in their future occupational plans after listening to either a gender neutral or a gender stereotyped children’s book. Questions concerning future occupational preferences, preferred playing items and colours were asked upon hearing either of the two stories. As hypothesized, the results of this study indicated a trend on an open-ended question for the gender-neutral story. It generated a more gender-neutral occupational preference, compared to the gender-stereotyped story. There was also a trend for the gender-stereotyped story, which triggered the girls towards a greater interest in becoming preschool teachers, compared to the gender-neutral story. Finally, there were no significant differences regarding colour preference for the remaining occupations. A plausible reason for this may be due to the low level of manipulation or stereotypical contents in both stories. The results, as well as future research and objectives are further discussed and analyzed. (Less)
