- Abstract
- The purpose of my study was to examine how people talk about their sibling position. I wanted to find out how we present ourselves as siblings, rather than establish one for all valid truth. In the study I explored whether people believe their birth order has affected them and if so, with what consequences. I conducted a qualitative study using twelve interviews and analyzed the material with a social constructionist perspective. I also made a document analyze, in which I found that the informant’s descriptions of sibling positions had many similarities to the picture of the different sibling positions presented in popular culture. I conducted a qualitative study using twelve interviews and analyzed the material with a social constructionist perspective. I also made a document analyze, in which I found that the informant’s descriptions of sibling positions had many similarities to the picture of the different sibling positions presented in popular culture. Although my interviews showed that many did recognize themselves in the descriptions found in society as typical of their sibling position, they did not always agree. I also found interviewees with completely different descriptions. My study showed that all the firstborns took a lot of responsibility and that they were leaders among their siblings. For the youngest siblings, on the other hand, it was more important to have fun, than to perform. The majority of the only children described themselves as socially, which is different from previous studies. The majority of the middle children have not felt forgotten in the family, which previous studies indicated, however indicated their response a feeling of jealousy towards their siblings’. One conclusion is that personal experiences of sibling positions interact with descriptions found in society. (Less)
