- Abstract
- During the last few decades there have been speculations as to whether heavy drug abuse among youths has increased. The aim of this thesis was to examine the heavy drug addiction amongst clients between the ages of 19 and 27 who have come in contact with the adults unit at Södermalms stadsdelsförvaltning (Stockholm, Sweden) in the time period between 2002-2010. What has the development for these young clients looked like and what factors may affect the development of drug abuse? What has the development for these young clients looked like and what factors may affect the development of drug abuse? Drug abuse is often explained from the perspective of a career where the development takes place from one stage to another. Have the young adults with heavy drug addiction made a quicker career or have they begun their abuse earlier? I have used a quantitative method and analyzed material from ASI-interviews performed at the adult drug abuse unit at Södermalm during the time period between 2002-2010. I have used the Gateway hypothesis and a theory by Pär Nygren (as it has no title, I will refer to it in the thesis as Pär Nygren’s theory). Results: The amount of clients with heavy drug misuse has decreased since 2002. Most young adults with heavy drug misuse spend most of their spare time with friends who currently misuse drugs. The majority have experienced difficulties with getting along with their parents. The majority have also got parents who misuse drugs. Young adults with heavy drug misuse start using drugs earlier. Conclusions drawn: The social network can be understood to be a factor affecting the possibility of developing heavy drug misuse. Other factors, such as a problematic relationship with your parents and parental misuse of drugs are factors which may indirectly affect the possible establishment of drug misuse. (Less)
