Abstract
I began this essay with the question: Does the Parental Leave Act (1995:584) affect the Swedish men's tendency to take their parental leave? As a rule of law (and law itself) is a standard that is elevated to rule the purpose was to see if this legislation (as standard) has affected men's propensity to take their parental leave, and also if there has been a restructuring with regard to the norm around the male and female. The analysis of the empirical data (statistics) shows that the Parental Leave Act (1995:584) has affected the Swedish men's tendency to take their parental leave in a positive way, however, there are regional differences. Where in Sweden the men live determines how large their collection of maternity leave will be. The... (More)
I began this essay with the question: Does the Parental Leave Act (1995:584) affect the Swedish men's tendency to take their parental leave? As a rule of law (and law itself) is a standard that is elevated to rule the purpose was to see if this legislation (as standard) has affected men's propensity to take their parental leave, and also if there has been a restructuring with regard to the norm around the male and female. The analysis of the empirical data (statistics) shows that the Parental Leave Act (1995:584) has affected the Swedish men's tendency to take their parental leave in a positive way, however, there are regional differences. Where in Sweden the men live determines how large their collection of maternity leave will be. The analysis of the empirical material also indicates that factors such as age and standard come into play when the Swedish men must take their parental leave. In addition to this the analysis of the empirical data also indicates that there is a constant struggle between the standard and laws around the Swedish men's collection of maternity leave. Which factor is victorious in this struggle/conflict is up to the Swedish men to decide for themselves as the Parental Leave Act is a right which the worker (meaning the Swedish men) can choose if they want to enable it or not. In this context the law is running the show and is therefore an indication of action (a norm) even if that conduct manual (standard) collides with the employer's standards. The law is an indication of the norm where dad is working and where mother stays at home and takes care of the child, may be broken by the workers (aimed at Swedish men) and that the law bans the way of this.
