- Abstract
- This report is the result of a project performed at the Department of Clinical Chemistry at UMAS in Malmö. To reduce the load at the surgery, the possibilities to let patients treated with anticoagulant drugs test themselves using self-service terminals will be investigated. The testing of these patients is currently performed by the personnel. The goal of this project is to investigate how terminals for self-testing should be designed with the help of a new model of test instrument. - This report is the result of a project performed at the Department of Clinical Chemistry at UMAS in Malmö. To reduce the load at the surgery, the possibilities to let patients treated with anticoagulant drugs test themselves using self-service terminals will be investigated. The testing of these patients is currently performed by the personnel. The goal of this project is to investigate how terminals for self-testing should be designed with the help of a new model of test instrument. It is also of interest that the technology could be used for other types of tests and testing in the home. This report includes investigations of the benefits of self testing, how patients manage to handle the test instruments and how the instruments can communicate with a computer system. The main benefits of self testing are fast access to test results which makes prescribing possible immediately after the testing. From an economic point of view, personnel costs would be considerably reduced. In this case however, the high maintenance cost of the test instruments implies that the cost per test is not lower compared with the current situation. Utilization of the advantages of the self-service terminals requires the patients to some extent be guided by the computer terminal in the case of problems during the testing. This is done by acquiring information from the test instruments through their computer interface. The design of these however, especially because of the use of infrared communication, complicates the interaction with the instruments considerably. (Less)
