Abstract
The aim of our study is to examine how fathers with experience of addiction perceive paternity and community support systems for addiction fathers. To answer our question formulations we performed eleven qualitative interviews with fathers who have experience of addiction. The study shows that there is an ambivalence concerning the perception of paternity. This due to the fact that many fathers believe that addiction and children are not compatible while they do not fully want to be absent in the father role. This ambivalence makes it difficult for the fathers to answer if they had a need for support during active addiction. However there is some recognition of the need of support while they are aware of their inability to receive... (More)
The aim of our study is to examine how fathers with experience of addiction perceive paternity and community support systems for addiction fathers. However there is some recognition of the need of support while they are aware of their inability to receive assistance. The fathers are receptive to support after the addiction, especially in the final stages of their treatment. During the ongoing addiction the fathers were unknowing of the accessible support. The fathers, now free from addiction, describe different support systems that they wish were offered during their addiction. Parent education, support talks and cooperation talks are examples of supports requested. Our study also shows that the addiction and the children’s mothers are two factors that based on fathers’ perspectives worsen the relationship with their children. Our empirics of the study are analyzed from an interactional perspective. (Less)
