The aim of this report was to examine how social workers in Sweden who meet women subjected to violence experience their work. Four social workers were interviewed and presented a fictitious case by which they had to make up their minds of how they would act when coming in contact with a woman whom they suspected were subjected to violence. The use of a fictitious case was inspired by the so-called vignette method. Theories about the street-level bureaucrat and his discretion were used in order to interpret and understand the collected material.... (More)

Theories about the street-level bureaucrat and his discretion were used in order to interpret and understand the collected material. The study showed that the social workers believed they had a substantial discretion in the work with women subjected to violence. The result of the study show among other that by using this discretion the social workers can see to the client’s individual needs and adjust the support from the way the needs look. (Less)
