Abstract
Problem:
Today's changing environment gives rise to rapid sequence of events and rapid information dissemination. More attention is given to crisis and how organizations should manage them. Today there is much literature and many approaches to illustrate how an organization can optimize their crisis management, but yet crisis continues to generate problems for organizations. We believe that one reason for this is that the literature has deficiencies in how organizations should implement these strategies. Organizational structure is likely to affect the implementation and our purpose of this paper is therefore to examine the organizational structure´s role in this process. To do this we assume a dynamic organizational structure. This papers theoretical contribution will therefore be a clarification of the role that organizational structure has on the implementation and use of proactive management strategies. Purpose:
The purpose of this paper is to investigate how a dynamic organizational structure can improve organizations' capacity to proactively manage crises. Research Questions:
1. How can a dynamic organizational structure help organizations to adapt to external changes?
2. How does a dynamic organizational structure affect information flow, interpretation and decision making within an organization?
3. How can a dynamic organizational structure affect the identification, use and development of appropriate skills? Hypothesis:
A dynamic organizational structure can facilitate the commissioning, implementation and use of proactive strategies. Method:
The method for this essay has been to find our research area trough existing literature and then to test our findings in an empirical context. In order to obtain a qualitative, empirical material we conducted five interviews with carefully selected individuals in Helsingborg´s municipality. The interviews have been of a semi-structured nature were the respondents is given much room to speak freely and give their own interpretation on the topics of this essay. Conclusion:
The dynamic organizational structure increases the capacity of organizations to proactively manage crises only when the management has understood the relationship between structure and communication. The dynamic organizational structure will then be able to ease crisis management in some areas, but also obstruct in other areas. (Less)
