Abstract
Moving during school age has been found to have negative educational consequences. This has been attributed to the harm caused to social relationships among children, school and family caused by residential mobility. The study presented here used data from Dynamics of Social Stratification, Socio-economic Status and Social Mobility: Evidence from Urban Ankara/Turkey dataset to investigate the impact of internal migration on children‟s educational attainment in Turkey. Ordinal Logistic Regression Models are used to discuss to what extent the migration period, place of origin, individual demographic characteristics and parental SES impact on the level of education of the individual. The research finds that children of school age relatively fare better in school if they have an urban place of origin, moved to the city before school age and, especially, if they moved for educational purposes, or because of parental job changes/requirements. However, migrants with rural backgrounds, who were female, or who moved next to their kinship/family ties within the city, are the most vulnerable group in urban schooling in Turkey. Therefore, there are limitations to the „loss of social capital argument‟; namely that the impact of internal migration on educational attainment is not negative and uniform for all migrant children.
