Abstract
In one year we Swedes consume approximately 800 kg food which means that the consumer choices we make in the stores is very important for both our health and environment. Health and environmental issues are now well-publicized debates and how consumers can affect our environment and our health are important issues. These environmental and health issues has become like a trend among consumers in selecting products. This contributes to that it is not always easy for consumers to choose products when they have, by far, too little knowledge of the organic products. The purpose of this master’s thesis is to explore the relevance of organic labels when it comes to the consumer’s choice of food. As a collection method we have chosen to make 250 questionnaires to people of different ages, in different cities and grocery stores. In addition to surveys, we also made two telephone interviews with people from companies involved in organic certification. The main reasons for organic consumption are personal health, the environment, quality and the satisfaction of being involved and contribute something useful to society. The reason, which is of relatively high importance, is that the price difference is a decisive factor for that the consumer may still choose conventional groceries. We think that this however, depends on the lack of knowledge that consumers have regarding eco-labeled products. (Less)
