- The foundation in which human rights are grounded is the idea of human dignity. Human rights are based on the idea that we as humans have an equal inherent dignity, which grants us rights. That an inherent human dignity exists is however something not everyone agrees upon. That is why I in this essay analyze the importance of human dignity for human rights. In order to analyze this, I discuss whether human rights would change if they were based on another foundation, than human dignity. The alternative foundation for human rights I discuss in this essay is a foundation based on utilitarianism.
