- It is a commonly held belief that human rights and economic development has a relationship where the one hinders the other, and that governments in developing countries must choose one or the other. This essay explores the relationship between the two in the context of the economic development in South Korea since its liberation in 1948. It will do a historical overview and see how the economic policies related to human rights. It will then see to the arguments about divisibility of human rights, and how the linkages between rights relates to
the economy. It will then see what general conclusions can be drawn from the Korean
example about the relation between human rights and economic development.

The relationship found is that human rights promotes Amartya Sen’s capabilities approach to economic development, and due to the linkages between human rights created a stronger desire for other rights. Under the Korean authoritarians state this create social disorder and eventually brought its demise. So human rights essentially creates institutional stability and predictability, along with stability in society; All components necessary for economic growth and development. (Less)
