- Abstract
- The sex tourism in Thailand is a widespread phenomenon where men around the globe have the privileged of visiting and taking part of an industry set up for an inter-national market. The purpose of this paper was to clarify how the sex tourism in Thailand can be seen from a postcolonial perspective, where countries with an unequal power configuration can result in an exploitation of what we call the third world countries. The rise of the sex industry in Thailand can be found in the historical, economic and cultural conditions in the country, which also have created a social acceptance of its existence. - The sex tourism in Thailand is a widespread phenomenon where men around the globe have the privileged of visiting and taking part of an industry set up for an inter-national market. The purpose of this paper was to clarify how the sex tourism in Thailand can be seen from a postcolonial perspective, where countries with an unequal power configuration can result in an exploitation of what we call the third world countries. The rise of the sex industry in Thailand can be found in the historical, economic and cultural conditions in the country, which also have created a social acceptance of its existence. The open-ended tourism and the prostitution are according to me closely connected and a consequence of the influence of external forces. Japan and the United States have both contributed to the development of the sex tourism in the area through the presence of their soldiers with a desire of amusement during the Second World War and the Vietnam War. When the Americans left the area, they left behind an outset of the sex industry, which would later on be aimed towards the in-ternational tourists. The modern-days sex tourists justify their actions through the conception that they belong to superior civilization. This apprehension of a dominant position has its origin in a racist conception of a colonial superiority. A legacy from the colonial period in which the world consisted in subordinated countries.
