Berger and Luckmann‟s social construction and Goffman‟s dramaturgical perspective were used as theoretical frames in the analysis of the results. The study was based on three focus groups with totally seventeen Swedish girls in the age of 16-19. In the focus groups, the girls discussed identity and how girls are being impacted by families, friends and media. The girls argued that they are more certain and aware of whom they are as they are getting older. Therefore, they are not as easily affected by external factors as younger girls. Despite that, the study showed that others have an impact on their identity. It was shown that girls adjust and use different roles depending on the social context, including the Internet. In a long-term perspective, adjustment can modify their identities. The study showed that personal values and opinions often come from the childhood and upbringing, mainly from parents and are therefore not easily affected by others. It is more likely that opinions and other values transforms by ongoing influences. For instance, previous studies have shown that being exposed to TV in a steady and increasingly way, can transform attitudes. This study also showed that media has an indirect impact. It occurs when the girls are influenced or inspired by friends or others in their surrounding, who have been affected by media. The girls ended up talking about media‟s portrait of young women and how it can affect them and girls in general. It emerged that media and social media are mainly affecting girls in their expression of identity, such as clothes and appearance. Media can also have an effect on internal aspects of themselves, such as body satisfaction, lower self esteem etcetera.
