Opportunities to participation in the general elections for people with intellectual disabilities related to the Swedish national objective of an accessible society for all citizens
The aim of this study is twofold; first to examine how Swedish government authorities and other relevant actors in the society regard the accessibility of general elections for people with intellectual disabilities. The second aim is to investigate in which way they can provide the target group with support in the voting process, from a political approach of the right to equal democratic participation. The study is based on five interviews with representatives of two government authorities, two disability associations and one foundation of distribution of easy-to-read material. It is also based on documents published by the actors in this study, mostly from the government authorities. The study was conducted with the national objective of full participation for persons with disabilities in all sectors of society as foundation.
Analysis of the study data has been made by applying the social and individual model of disability. Comparisons between our data and the national objectives of Swedish disability policy have been made. We have discerned a difference between the national objective and the information given by the participants and the informational documents filed the situation of reality for the target group.
In light of our empirical data we have seen that the actors can offer some supportive services for people with intellectual disabilities in general elections. However, it was not a prioritized issue for any of the participants in the present study. (Less)
