Abstract
The purpose of this study is to examine social class- and gender differences regarding youth´s habits of living on the subject of diet, exercising and what they do to maintain a healthy living. The research questions of the study are: Are there any differences between social classes’ habits of living? Are there any differences between boys´ and girls´ habits of living? The theory in the study is based on sociological perspective theories, including class theory and gender theory. Based on these theories 17 hypotheses were created which are divided into eight hypotheses on gender and nine hypotheses on class.

The study is conducted through a quantitative approach and a deductive methodology. The empirical foundation has been gathered through a survey, including 15 survey questions, which later on were analysed in the analytical program SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences.) Totally 104 people answered the survey. All of the delivered surveys where completed, however there are 158 senior students in the Osbecksgymnasiet in Laholm implying there were some loss in participation among the senior students.

The result is that ten out of 17 hypotheses were falsified. There were differences in gender on three topics, including eating unhealthy food, exercising and the amount of time spent in front of the computer or television. In the class category there was only one significant difference which was the amount of time spent in front of the computer or television. To conclude it seems to exist significant differences in the category of gender, however there seem to be less significant differences between different classes. However the amounts of respondents were too few to give a reliable result on the category of class. Still both class and gender theory might be interesting to use in future research on the topic of people’s habits of living. (Less)
