Abstract
This study deals with the theory of the social capital and the addiction of cannabis. Social capital is a theoretical perspective with no specific concept. The aim was to compare the definitions of friendship and the addiction of seven law students. The purpose of this paper, with the support of the theory of the social capital, was to investigate the students’ reactions and how they act when they discover a friend using cannabis. Cannabis use contravenes Swedish law. The target group for this study was made up of law students, due to their active choice study Swedish law. One of the reasons this paper focuses on cannabis is because it is common knowledge that the drug is used as a tool to combat stress, often caused by studies. The societal stamp describes the use of cannabis as illegal and deviant. Our specific interest is to investigate the students' attitudes and loyalty to this norm, by comparing personal definitions of addiction with the norm and discussing the meaning of social capital. The results of the study showed us that law students ignored the law and argued that you should talk to the abusive friend. Furthermore, this mainly concerns the closest of friends. Discussing the problem together within the inner circle of friends is the advocated tool order to solve such offenders’ behavior. Drug-using friends who are not part of the inner circle are not given similar help, and one reason is partly that this could be unfavorable toward the law student's future career success. (Less)
