Abstract
How do people with a self-injury use the social forums on the Internet?

The increasing use of Internet has contributed to the opening of new "worlds" where people with a certain problem can create and / or find communities which focus on their specific needs.
The aim of our study was to examine how people with self-injurious behaviour interact with each other on the Internet. We conducted a qualitative document analysis of three Internet forums and a semi-structured interview with a representative from an association for people with self-injury.
The theoretical points we have used is Goffman's dramaturgical perspective and his theory of stigma. We have also in our understanding of our empirical work used the Howard S. Becker's... (More)

Becker's labeling theory and theories of creating identities in relation to the Internet and the creation of a subculture.
In our empirical work we have seen that the stigma and the negative labeling the members are experiencing in real life does not exist in the forums. We have observed several social roles that members take on themselves on the forums and the creation of a subculture. We have discovered that the amount of triggering material appearing on the forums does not depend on which rules the forums have, rather on how active the moderators are to maintain them. (Less)
