Energy Prices and the Stock Market
(2011) NEKK01 20102Department of Economics
- Abstract
- The aim of this thesis is to examine the effect changes in oil, coal, natural gas and electricity prices have on the stock market. Using a linear regression approach, we study nine market sectors in Sweden and Norway from January 1996 to November 2010. Previous research has in some cases shown that oil prices have a impact on the stock market. We expand this research by including more energy variables. Our main finding is that oil has a positive impact on both markets but with a larger effect on the Norwegian. The impact of the other energy variables is limited and differs between sectors making it hard to draw any general conclusion.
