Abstract
Leadership is a well-researched topic. The meaning of leadership has often been brought to magical levels beyond the ordinary sense and some experts suggests that leadership is a phenomenon mostly expressed in best selling books and leadership courses. So how does leadership existence come to expression in a human service-organization and which meaning does the leaders in these organizations assign their leadership? Leadership is a well-researched topic. The meaning of leadership has often been brought to magical levels beyond the ordinary sense and some experts suggests that leadership is a phenomenon mostly expressed in best selling books and leadership courses. So how does leadership existence come to expression in a human service-organization and which meaning does the leaders in these organizations assign their leadership? The long overlooked topic of followership and which role the followers play in conjunction with the leader is integrated in this discussion. Leadership in human service-organizations differs from leadership in the industry through its politically controlled function, the work with humans as raw material and by the rationality of institutional efficiency, that they put into practice. The movement to New Public Management has therefore some inconveniences that together with the just described factors, causes some obstacles and difficulties for the leaders. The data was collected with a qualitative method and thematically open interviews, and the outcome of the study reveals a leadership that can be described as postheroic with a lot of participation from the followers.
