Fair Trade's Role in Reducing Vulnerability to Climate Change
(2011) HEKM10 20111Human Ecology
- Abstract
- This thesis explores the relationship between the Fair Trade system and producers' vulnerability to climate change. It is African focused, using material collected in Senegal, and as such looks at what adaptation strategies and resilience building potential the movement has using the Sustainable Livelihood Approach. It outlines the current environmental awareness of the movement, what climatic risks the producers are facing and it systematically relates Fair Trade activities to all five Sustainable Livelihood Approach capitals. It argues that the Fair Trade movement has a holistic approach to sustainable livelihoods and considers all capitals, albeit to different extents. Further, it argues that the Fair Trade system decreases producer... (More)

It argues that the Fair Trade movement has a holistic approach to sustainable livelihoods and considers all capitals, albeit to different extents. Further, it argues that the Fair Trade system decreases producer vulnerability to risks, such as climate change induced problems, on multiple levels. Nevertheless, it recommends the movement to focus more on areas such as considering greenhouse gas emissions in its activities, working towards facilitating regional, namely South-South trade, strengthening information sharing systems and investing in risk planning and producer skills for facing future climate variability.
