This master thesis is an explorative study. Wide ranges of interviews were made and are the base of the study. Observations were made at CDC in Torsvik to get an accurate understanding of the working methods and processes. The scope of this master thesis is the Customer Delivery business, with focus on the return system of the used handling material (HM) called the Customer Distribution platform (CD platform).

The master thesis identifies that the majority of the problems regarding the return system concerns division of responsibilities and lack of holistic view. This has resulted in a too low focus on HM in comparison to the goods and low focus on costs connected to HM. In general the design of the return system is good but there is a need of process based management.

The authors recommend IKEA to employ a project leader to be able to realize the identified improvement opportunities. The master thesis provides a holistic view that has been lacking and could be used as a base for process based management. (Less)
