Abstract
This paper is a study of Vitruvius and the lifting devices he describes in his work De Architecura. The aim of this paper is to figure out how truthful Vitruvius' statement about the rarity of cranes is. I also explore what sort of education Vitruvius expected an architect to have; thereby stating that a certain level of competence was expected of the people who constructed and handled such lifting devices. By looking at which monumental buildings were constructed in Vitruvius' lifetime (from roughly 80 BC to 20 BC when he presented his books to Augustus) I want to give the
