- Abstract
- I have studied 40 individuals in order to see if there´s a relationship between poor dental health and osteitis pubis, because the two characters can be a sign of pregnancy. The individuals in my study are from S:t Petri cemetery in Helsingborg and Löddeköpinge cemetery in Scania, Sweden. Both cemeteries are dated to the medieval period. Of 22 women, I could establish that 19 had osteitis pubis, and there were also 5 men, that had osteitis pubis, of 18 male individuals.
My result showed that the women had a higher tendency to lose their teeth ante mortem than the men in my study. The women also had a higher rate than the men, when I compared the two groups of middle adults (35-59 years) against each other, regarding frequency of caries,... My result showed that the women had a higher tendency to lose their teeth ante mortem than the men in my study. The women also had a higher rate than the men, when I compared the two groups of middle adults (35-59 years) against each other, regarding frequency of caries, frequency of periapical abscess and the frequency of caries and ante mortem tooth loss. It could be the result of pregnancy, based on the theory that women get a poorer dental health during the pregnancy because of the hormones. But I didn’t see any correlation between poor dental health and osteitis pubis within the group of women. (Less)
