- The increasing amount of inhabitants living in urban areas, especially in the Global South, are causing big pressure on the city infrastructure and but also at the global environment, as a result of changing consumption- and production patterns. In 1996 the United Nations conference of cities, Habitat II, were held in Istanbul, resulting in the Habitat agenda, a plan for achieving sustainable development in a world with growing cities.
The purpose of this thesis is to examine how sustainable development is defined in the Habitat Agenda and how this corresponds with the implemented definition in Urban Management Programme, for this the cases Tunis and Bamako are used. The purpose of this thesis is to examine how sustainable development is defined in the Habitat Agenda and how this corresponds with the implemented definition in Urban Management Programme, for this the cases Tunis and Bamako are used. From an analytical framework constructed by green and brown agenda I examine what result the work for sustainable urban development is trying to achieve. For investigate how successful the implementation in each case are, urban governance theory is used defined by good governance and governance failure. The analysis shows that poverty reduction and social development according to the brown agenda are the main focus in sustainable development work today, and that implementing good urban governance is a long and complex process, hard to accomplish in a limited amount of time.
