Abstract
This essay is a comparing study of the reconciliation work done by the International Criminal Tribunal for former Yugoslavia (ICTY) and the International Criminal Tribunal of Rwanda (ICTR). These very similar tribunals are differentiated in one major factor; their mandate. The ICTR has written in its mandate that the tribunal is to work for reconciliation, but the ICTY has not. This difference in the mandate has made the author interested in what that difference can mean to the work of the tribunals. When evaluating the tribunal’s work, will the result be different? With help of the theories about thin notion of reconciliation, the author creates four criteria for a “successful reconciliation” and against them the author measures the work... (More)

With help of the theories about thin notion of reconciliation, the author creates four criteria for a “successful reconciliation” and against them the author measures the work of the tribunal to see which tribunal has been more successful.
The result of the essay is that the tribunals work seems to be very similar, regardless of the mandate. Even though ICTR is more successful in one criterion, it seems as the success in this criteria depends on more than just the tribunal’s work (Less)
