Abstract
Purpose: The thesis aims to explore business opportunities for
Consafe Logistics to introduce PDA’s (Personal Digital
Assistants) in healthcare and welfare for senior citizens.
Method: The study is considered to be both descriptive and
explorative and throughout the project an abductive
research method was used. Data was collected through
literature reviews, archival analyses, interviews and
observations. Initial studies of as well healthcare and
welfare as PDA’s was made, followed by an analysis of
potential business areas. This analysis led to two
qualitative case studies with concluding market analyses.
Conclusion: The healthcare and welfare market is a complex segment

welfare as PDA’s was made, followed by an analysis of

qualitative case studies with concluding market analyses.
Conclusion: The healthcare and welfare market is a complex segment
with particularly special conditions that differ significantly
from traditional customer markets for PDA’s. In order to
identify which areas within the segment that are especially
suitable for the use of PDA’s an extensive understanding of
the market is required.
PDA’s or other handheld devices can improve efficiency
when mobility is a crucial factor and the need for
information access during movement is significant. Two
target groups of significant size was identified within
healthcare and welfare and where these aspects plays an
v
important role:
1. Nurses working in institutional care
2. Paramedics or assistant nurses in assisted living.
After further studies, the use of PDA’s was considered
uncertain in institutional care, due to its significant
documentation requirements, complex working routines
and lack of previous examples. Nevertheless, the authors
believe that the area should not be completely rejected.
This specific case has the potential to become a future
promising market due to its ongoing development.
On the other hand, assistant living is considered to be an
area with the potential to gain apparent benefits from
using handheld computers. The work is based on
reoccurring routines and paramedics experience a need for
information, documentation and communication while
moving that suits the format. This specific segment also
shares certain characteristics with Consafe Logistics
existing customers. One product in Consafe Logistics
product portfolio is considered to be suitable to further
develop into a product for the assistant living market. (Less)
