The main question dealt with is with what measures and mechanisms NGOs handles critic on legitimacy and accountability deficit. It defines accountability and non-governmental organisations to facilitate an understanding of the concepts and notions of the study and goes on to discuss the criticism faced by NGOs, mainly from the academic society. Furthermore, the study examines the legal status and personality of NGOs in international law. The question of legal personality is a contested on and this study poses two theories against each other, with the outcome of a lack of legal personality. The essay then largely focuses on measures of accountability and different tools and processes available for NGOs to apply. Finally, the study looks into the role of organisations such as the Humanitarian Accountability Partnership International, whose prospect is to increase accountability both upwards to donors but principally downwards to beneficiaries. The discussion aims to connect the different parts of the study and present the difficulties surrounding the subject. In concluding notes, the study answers the questions posed, but also raises interesting thoughts worth pursuing in future studies. (Less)
