Two objectives are highlighted in the thesis, i.e. the reasons that institutions matter for economic development and the engine for the institutional evolution. It can be concluded from the thesis that the system of property right is crucial for determining institution’s efficiency and thus affecting economic performance, and social conflicts as well as interaction between different agents are the essential for promoting the institutional change. For convincing the institution’s impact on economic performance, the quantitative approach is applied. The trends of TFP growth and labor productivity share similar pattern, which further supports the assumption that institution has the capability of shaping the productivity and significantly affecting economic performance. .
