Abstract
This Master’s thesis compares and analyses the parts pertaining to history in the US American classification system Dewey Decimal Classification and the Japanese classification system Nippon Decimal Classification. The foundation of the study is a social constructionist viewpoint where society, people and knowledge are assumed to be socially constructed and thereby the systems are studied in relation to this idea. Both systems tell a story of the history that has passed in their ountries but not only that, they also tell a story about the societies in which they function.
