- Abstract (Swedish)
(More)

(Less)
- Abstract
- Value-at-Risk (VaR) has grown to become an important risk measurement used by financial institutions in the last 20 years. The primary problem with this measure is to choose the most appropriate probability density function to forecast the risk. This means assumptions have to be made about the underlying asset’s probabilistic behavior and from these assumptions evaluate the Value-at-Risk measure. This study conducts an evaluation of the predictive performance of two methodologies related to extreme value theory (EVT): the block-maxima method and the peaks-over-threshold method. We also try to determine how well the theoretical models fit to real financial data. The data used is the daily returns of the OMX Stockholm 30 Index, and the... (More)

We also try to determine how well the theoretical models fit to real financial data. The data used is the daily returns of the OMX Stockholm 30 Index, and the sample extends over the period 1 January 1987 to 31 December 2010. The results suggest a very good model fit and accurate forecasts of extreme losses at high confidence levels, reinforcing previous research made on EVT-based methodology. Especially, we find that, in comparison to more traditional VaR-methods, the peaks-over- threshold method produces accurate results. (Less)
