(Less)

Background: The undercover police officers major task is, by appearing as a civilian, to monitor and detect criminal suspects. The study is based on the undercover police officers behaviour in different situations, both when working undercover as well as when their police identity has been revealed.

Aim: To acquire a better understanding of what it means to be an undercover police officer. The main question is: “How do undercover-police officers appear?”

Brief description of the methodological and theoretical positions: The empirical material of the study consists of an analysis of the posts written by five randomly selected interviewees which have been anonymized. The theoretical frame is Erving Goffman’s dramaturgical perspective and in a lesser scale his analyze in "Where the action is" by gambling metaphors.

Conclusion: The undercover police officers carry out their job by acting as if their working situation is their every day life. They are constantly aware of the role they are performing in order to blend in the environment and not be revealed. This normality is done by walking, talking and dress in a suitable way depending on the situation.
