- Abstract (Swedish)
- This thesis analyzes how the field of library and information science is constituted in 580 theses written between 2000-2010, by library and information science students at the three Swedish universities Borås, Uppsala and Lund. Furthermore, I investigate how the findings from the three universities differ from each other and how the results as a whole can be understood in relation to libraries and librarianship as fields of practice. The method used is content analysis and the results are interpreted in light of two theories. The first theory is Michael Gibbon’s theory of knowledge production and the second is Richard Whitley’s theory of the intellectual and social organization of scientific fields. The findings of this thesis are that LIS, as it is constituted in the chosen material, is a heterogeneous field with little co-ordination regarding problems formulated, methods used or theories applied. The field shows almost every characteristic one would expect from a discipline based in the societies/humanities. Compared to LIS research in general, the theses examined are more rooted in library science as opposed to information science, more dependent on qualitative methods, apply less theory and are more interconnected to libraries as a field of practice.
