Abstract
The Prestigious University and the Boot Factory

The purpose of this paper was to examine whether students in the School of Social Work experience differences between the students in Lund and Helsingborg. Since we ourselves have experienced that the teachers have told us several times that our study results are worse than students in Lund, we wanted to see if other students, than ourselves and those in our class, have experienced this. Our study was conducted using a web survey sent to students in the semesters 1, 3 and 5. The survey shows that two out of three students have experienced differences since they started the School of Social Work. It is mainly from lecturers and other students that the respondents have heard of the students... (More)

The purpose of this paper was to examine whether students in the School of Social Work experience differences between the students in Lund and Helsingborg. Our study was conducted using a web survey sent to students in the semesters 1, 3 and 5. The survey shows that two out of three students have experienced differences since they started the School of Social Work. It is mainly from lecturers and other students that the respondents have heard of the students being better or worse than their counterparts at the two locations. One out of two students heard from lecturers about the differences. We have looked at three factors that could influence the outcome of the students in Helsingborg poorer academic achievement; widening participation, access points and the lecturer’s preconceptions. To add further aspects of our investigation, we have tried to understand this from an organization theoretical symbolic perspective, where we believe that academic background influences the results. By the Pygmalion effect, we have shown that the lecturer’s expectations affect students study results, positive or negative. (Less)
