- Finding a meaningful life for residents with dementia - a qualitative study based on caregivers perspectives
The aim of the essay was to study how the caregivers in an accommodation can give a resident with the diagnosis dementia, a meaningful and active existence. The aim was also to find out when shifting housing is timely for the resident. We have focused on two kinds of accommodations; one for residents with the diagnosis dementia and the other with both demented and non-demented residents. We used qualitative methods to derive our empirical work; interviews with six caregivers and one nurse specialized in dementia. In addition we made observations.

The caregivers mean that the themes activation, staff, environment and shifting housing timely are important for a demented resident when it comes to having a meaningful and active life. Our analyze is based on these themes, the theory empowerment which means giving a person power and confidence to make own decisions in life and a salutogenic approach that has a focus on what the person can achieve. Caregivers explained that you need to focus on healthy abilities. Our study showed that the themes above are ways to work with and produce healthy abilities that the demented person still has. The conclusion of our empirical work and previous research is that the accommodation for residents with dementia is the most properly customized for a demented person. However the accommodation for both demented and non-demented, can give meaningful interaction. (Less)
