Abstract
Social dimensions of a healthcare profession – midwives’ psychosocial work with adolescent mothers-to-be in Swedish prenatal care (translated title)

The aim of this study was to examine how Swedish midwives work psychosocially with adolescents in the prenatal healthcare individually and groupwise. Adolescents who become parents are according to research more often troubled by psychosocial risk factors and can therefore be in need of extra psychosocial support during pregnancy. The study focuses on the midwives’ own perspectives of this matter, and strives at answering questions about what the psychosocial support consists of, how it is designed to fit especially for a young mother to be and if this work suggests methods and approaches... The study focuses on the midwives’ own perspectives of this matter, and strives at answering questions about what the psychosocial support consists of, how it is designed to fit especially for a young mother to be and if this work suggests methods and approaches which can also be found in social work.
The study is qualitative and based on semi-structured interviews with seven midwives working in maternity welfare receptions in southern Sweden. The empirical material was then analyzed based on three different theoretical starting points about empowerment, power and approach. The findings suggest that even though most midwives did consider psychosocial risk factors as being more common among adolescent mothers to be, they believed that adolescents were a heterogeneous group with great variations within and that parental skills do not necessary depend on the age. The adolescents’ social network was also considered as decisive for how well the young girls cope with the situation of becoming a parent. The findings also indicated that midwives used strategies that can be compared to empowerment in social work. The perspective of power was also integrated in the analyze of the empirical material and this suggested that if there is a risk for negative consequences due to unequal power relations between professional and patient/client, which is not uncommon in the social work context, the midwives used empowerment and an approach that helped support the adolescent girls and minimize the negative consequences of power.
