The purpose of this study is to examine a new method of working with patients with a mental disability according to a holistic-view perspective. The aim is to find out how the employees at one psychosis unit at a Swedish hospital view their work, helping patients to find strategies to handle their lives and to sense quality in life, as well as to examine how the employees themselves look upon their own cooperation. I have conducted a qualitative study with four semi-structured interviews. The aims have been studied through an analysis of four interviews with employees from the psychosis unit. The theoretical points I have used is the stigma theory, mainly based on Goffman’s ideas on the theory. Some of my conclusions were the following: To obstruct stigma you need to work I-supporting, to help with concrete means, attend meetings with the patient and to help the patient reach disease awareness. The most important factors for recovery and quality of life were for the patients to reach disease awareness, and recieve emotional practical support in everyday life. The employees perceived that their cooperation worked well but that communication and insight in other employees’ work could get better.
Key words: mental disability, holistic-view perspective, psychosis unit, stigma, quality of life. (Less)
