(2011) PSYK01 20111Department of Psychology
- Abstract (Swedish)
(More)

(Less)
- Abstract
- The purpose of this study was to describe if judgments of individuals characteristics of warmth (kindness, social skills), characteristics of competence (intelligence, carefulness) and hiring suitability vary depending on if the person being judged is physically attractive or physically unattractive and if the judge is warned or not about the implicit effect of attractiveness on judgment of individuals through the halo effect. A fictive job position was created with 24 applying persons. The only thing separating the applicators was their attractiveness, 12 were attractive and 12 were unattractive. The survey was created in four versions, two versions contained a warning condition about the implicit effect of attractiveness on judgments of... (More)

The survey was created in four versions, two versions contained a warning condition about the implicit effect of attractiveness on judgments of individuals, the two other versions didn´t. The warning condition consisted of 31 participants and the none-warning condition of 35 participants. The results were strong and significant main effects. Attractive individuals were judged as warmer, more competent and more suitable for hiring than unattractive individuals. There was no interaction effect between the warning condition and attractiveness. A discussion about the stereotype of attractiveness’s existence, strength, how it operates in a recruitment situation and what could be of interest in future research follows. (Less)
