- Abstract
- The point of departure for this Master’s thesis is twofold. First, the authors notice an apparent shift in focus, from collections towards the audiences, which has affected the international museum sector during the last decades. Second, they notice a change in the discourse concerning the cultural sector towards interpreting issues in economic terms. The development of the British method Generic Learning Outcomes (GLO) is here interpreted as a result of both these shifts.
The aim of the thesis is to study the introduction of GLO in a Swedish context.
GLO consists of a conceptual framework for measuring learning (in e.g. museums), evaluation, and development of cultural organisations.

The aim of the thesis is to study the introduction of GLO in a Swedish context.
GLO consists of a conceptual framework for measuring learning (in e.g. museums), evaluation, and development of cultural organisations.
Through a case study that was carried out in Kulturen, a museum of cultural history, in Lund, Sweden, the authors examine a learning project in which the museum staff took part during the autumn 2010 and the spring 2011. The methods used are semi-structured interviews with, amongst others, project participants, and observations during the meetings in the project group. Furthermore, a study of relevant literature of the field supplements the empirical material. As for the theoretical background of the study, the authors apply Bourdieu’s theories of cultural capital and field studies. The theoretical approaches of socio-cultural and constructivist perspectives on learning are the main points of departure considering learning in museums.
One of the main results of the study is that GLO can successfully be used to assist museums in meeting the motives and needs of the audience. Furthermore, the results of the study indicate that GLO, if applied adequately, can help balance the economics-based discourse and put more focus on the qualitative aspects and values of museums and culture.
