Abstract
The Japanese postposition which in this paper is to be referred to as the topic particle wa, is
said to be possessing functions which have been thoroughly debated and analyzed by
numerous linguists. It has as a result brought upon us a number of distinguishable theories
concerning the qualities of this particle, providing us with different analyses to comprehend.
Depending on which theory one is referred to, the particle seems to possess different, or a
different quantity of qualities. This paper attempts to outline a description of different theories
concerning the particle in order to reveal the different qualities it is said to be possessing, and if
it is possible to claim there are different kinds of wa.
