- Abstract
- This Master’s thesis is set to study why art historical museums exhibit their permanent collections in a different way than what is generally more common in natural history and cultural history museums. Whereas art history museums tend to keep their rooms free from voices, natural and cultural history museums tend to (and have for a long while) build up more scenes. I also study how these ways of exhibiting might affect different types of visitors. By a qualitative survey carried out through emails, seven museums, have answered questions regarding how they work with and relate to their permanent collections, exhibition language as well as their views on the future and their use of workshops, guided tours and lectures. I also study how these ways of exhibiting might affect different types of visitors. By a qualitative survey carried out through emails, seven museums, have answered questions regarding how they work with and relate to their permanent collections, exhibition language as well as their views on the future and their use of workshops, guided tours and lectures. The museums cover the three academic disciplines (art history, natural history and cultural history) and are situated around the Nordic countries and Great Britain. The responses to the survey have been analyzed with the help of sociological and pedagogical theory and set into different perspectives, how meaning is created in museums and how this can affect different types of visitors. The results show that there is a discrepancy when it comes to how museum professionals talk about what they want their visitors to achieve from a visit; while art history museums talk about beauty and contemplation, cultural and natural history museums talk about education and learning. This in itself opens up questions regarding the museal role in society as well as the problem of postmodernism – deciding what voice and what story is to be focused on. (Less)
